RICHMOND – Joseph John Anderson (1832 – 1912)

Morice Bing was born in Hungary in 1830. He served in the army before emigrating to Australia in 1852. For eight years he made his way in New South Wales before arriving in Christchurch in 1860. He made a living farming sheep and classing wool. He became a well known face around the Addington Saleyards.

In 1863, he married Ann Smith at Kaiapoi and they went on to have 3 sons and 4 daughters. The Bings brought 200 acres just north of the Avon River (near Stanmore Road); their property ending at where London Street now runs. After his death in 1877, his land began to be subdivided and sold – the area referred to as Bingsland.

Morice Bing is buried in Barbadoes Street Cemetery.

Joseph John Anderson was born in London in 1832. Arriving in Christchurch in 1864, he became a civil servant. He married Ellen Hockley and the couple settled down on their own land in Bingsland. During his service with the local government, he played a great role in the decision to rename Bingsland to its current name: Richmond.

Joseph died in 1921.
