Jury List 1860

Came across an interesting article from The Lyttelton Times dated 19th May 1860 that carried some big pioneer names:

“List of persons qualified and liable to serve as jurors within twenty miles of the Resident Magistrates office, Christchurch:

(was the first gardener of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, also planted the belt of trees around the edge of Hagley Park)

(Canterbury Superintendent)

*Birdling, William, Kaituna, Stockowner
(Birdlings Flat is named after him)

*Bishops, James, lower Lincoln Road, Larborer
*Bishops, Robert, lower Lincoln Road, Farmer
(Went on with brother William to found the suburb of Bishopdale, owning and running very successful orchards there)

(One of first settlers in Heathcote Valley)

(Co-owner of The Springs which is now the township of Lincoln)

*Creyke, Alfred Richard, Ilam, Farmer, Gentleman
(Streets in Ilam and Darfield named after him. Was a huge landowner and builder of the Okeover Homestead which still stands in the grounds of the Canterbury University)
ALFRED IS BURIED AT ST PETER’S ANGLICAN CHURCH THOUGH HIS GRAVE IS MISSING IN ACTION. SOME OF THE GRAVES ARE FENCED OFF SO I’M GATHERING HE IS IN THERE.

*Davie, Cyrus, Christchurch, Surveyor
(The only settler who made the journey to Canterbury aboard two of the first four ships – the Randolph and the Sir George Seymour)
CYRUS IS BURIED AT BARBADOES STREET CEMETERY.

*Dobson, Edward, Sumner, Provincial Engineer
(Father of Arthur Dudley Dobson of the Arthur’s Pass fame)

(Founder of the suburb of Fendalton: Arrived on the “Sir George Seymour”)

(Gardiners Road is named after him. Also went on to own the Purau Homestead at Purau, Lyttelton Harbour)

*Gebbies, David, Gebbies Flat, Farmer
(Gebbies Pass named after his family. Family arrived in Canterbury with, and worked for, William Deans in 1843)

(Opened the first Merchant store in Christchurch, now known as Pyne Gould Corporation & PGG Wrightson, homestead on Springfield Road destroyed in February 2011 earthquake)

(Were just 14 & 16 years old when they set sail on the Sir George Seymour)

*Hart, Michael Brennan, Lichfield Street, CHCH, Late Publican
(Arrived on”The Cressy”, walked over the Bridle Path with his family, pitched a tent on what was to become Lichfield Street and eventually built his business there – The White Hart Hotel – the first pub in Chch)
MICHAEL IS BURIED AT BARBADOES STREET CEMETERY

*Hay, Ebenezer, Pigeon Bay, Stockowner
(Founder of Pigeon Bay. Brought William Deans, the Gebbies and the Mansons down to Canterbury from Wellington on his boat “The Richmond” in 1843).

(Employee of Jane Deans)

(Jefferys Road is named after him)

*Luck, Issac, Gloucester Street, Architect
(Brother-in-law & partner of Benjamin Mountfort)

*Manson, Samuel, Governors Bay, Farmer
(Family came down to Canterbury from Wellington with William Deans. Samuel worked at Riccarton as a builder – building the first home on the Canterbury Plains. Samuel also father of the first European child born on the Plains: Jeannie Manson)

(Designed some of the most well known hertiage buildings in Christchurch such as the Musuem and The Arts Centre)

(Huge land owners, gifted Nunweek Park to the people of Christchurch)
