Jimmy Robinson Clough (1811 – 1874)    Died of old age      Place of Death: Alford Forest, Canterbury

* One of the first Europeans to settle in Canterbury – namely Akaroa.
* First European to travel up the Avon River.
* Built the flagpole and was present at Green’s Point, Akaroa where the British Flag was raised, crushing the French hope for a French settlement in 1840.
* Showed William Deans Putaringamotu which is now known as the suburb of Riccarton.
* Helped the Deans and Samuel Manson to erected the first housing and fences at Riccarton.
* Planted what could be the oldest introduced tree in Mid-Canterbury at Homebush in 1851.  A Black Poplar that still grows today.
* Jimmy’s eldest son Abner is remembered today in the naming of Abner’s Head, Abner’s Pool at Homebush, Darfield (where Jimmy worked as Manager 1851 – 1853) and Abner’s Spur at Peel Forest, Canterbury.

Buried at the Old Settler’s Cemetery, Ashburton.
