Joseph Greenwood – Whalers From Akaroa

“One need not be in a large town to see the horror and misery of drunkards. For even here it is enough to make one dread it when one sees the quarrelling and fighting that is going on.  There were 20-30 people here (at Port Levy) – mostly whalers from Akaroa”.

Joseph Greenwood ~ 25th December 1843
*Along with his brothers, James and Edward, they were the first Europeans to settle at Purau, Banks Peninsula (pictured).  They were also the first to experience Canterbury’s first robbery in 1846.  The following year, they sold Purau to George Rhodes and moved up north.  By 1850, James and Joseph were both dead.*
